Time savings in pretreatment: BMS Coating chooses chemical treatment as an alternative to blasting
At BMS Coating, the focus is always on achieving a reliable and high-quality end result. The company specialises in powder coating a wide variety of metal components for both indoor and outdoor applications.
From aluminium domes and façade elements to machine parts and car rims, BMS Coating handles both small and large batches in virtually any desired colour.
For many years, the company relied on traditional blasting methods as part of its pretreatment process. Techniques such as sandblasting and stainless-steel grit blasting were used to prepare metal surfaces before powder coating. In practice, however, BMS Coating increasingly encountered the limitations of these methods, particularly when working with aluminium.
Today, the company uses chemical pretreatment products from AD Chemicals, including MM31®, Cleaner OV, Cleaner Neutral AL and Strip MCV. This switch has resulted in more consistent surface preparation, improved process control and significant time savings. Across the different process steps, BMS Coating saves approximately a full day.

These savings are not only achieved through faster treatment, but also through fewer handling steps, reduced waste streams and less rework and post-treatment.
As Barry, owner of BMS Coating, explains:
“With AD’s chemistry, we definitely save a day’s worth of time across all processes.”
Cost savings, time savings and process reliability
After several demonstrations with AD Chemicals, BMS Coating saw that good paint adhesion on aluminium could be achieved with a relatively limited application of MM31®. This gave the company the confidence to move from mechanical blasting towards chemical pretreatment.
Where the previous process mainly consisted of blasting followed by powder coating, BMS Coating now works with a water-based cleaning step using Cleaner Neutral AL or Cleaner OV, followed by MM31® and powder coating....
