2.5D or XY tube laser cutting? From now on, the choice is yours

Should a cut-out fit snugly, or do you want to leave space for a weld? At 247TailorSteel, you can now choose between 2.5D and XY tube laser cutting.

When cutting slots and holes in round tubes, the cutting technique determines how tight the fit will be. For most applications, 2.5D offers the best tolerances and the most predictable result. But sometimes you want a tighter fit, and sometimes you need a little extra space. That’s why you can now choose this yourself during your configuration in Sophia®: 2.5D or XY.

The difference lies in the cut-throughs and holes in round tubes. With 2.5D, the laser head is positioned at right angles to the surface. This creates extra space on the tapered sides, which is useful if you want to conceal a weld seam there. With XY, the laser head moves sideways, so that the cut runs straight through the wall. The result: a tight, cylindrical cut-through with no clearance at the sides.

Choose 2.5D if your design does not require tight cylindrical cut-outs, or if that extra space around holes is actually welcome for welding or finishing. Choose XY if a tube or pin needs to fit tightly into a round tube, or if the joint needs to look neat.

Ordering is just as you’re used to. Upload your tube drawing and specify whether you want 2.5D or XY when placing your order. The option is available on our Sophia® ordering platform.
